Uganda declares Ebola outbreak; WHO allocates $1M for response
Uganda declared a Sudan ebolavirus outbreak on January 30, 2025, marking the country's sixth such outbreak. As of early March, 14 cases (confirmed and probable) had been identified across multiple districts including Kampala, Wakiso, Mbale, Jinja, and Mukono, with 4 deaths recorded.
The index case was a 32-year-old male nurse from Wakiso District who died on January 29. The WHO has allocated $1 million to support Uganda's response efforts. Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has called for calm and urged the public to report suspected cases and follow hygiene guidelines.
Surveillance teams are active in affected districts, and isolation units have been set up. The public is advised to avoid contact with bodily fluids of infected persons and to report any symptoms including fever, fatigue, and bleeding.
